Space Wonderland - My Nasa Tweetup Story

“Space Wonderland”

My journey into the unknown

The subculture of space geeks

The ascent of humanity

The growth, enlightenment, and change which ensued.

Note: NASA Tweetup was an event held by NASA via Twitter which selected 150 people from thousands of applicants to experience the backstage of Space Exploration and front seats to one of the last Space Shuttle Launches scheduled. I was one of the people chosen for this once-in-a-lifetime historical event, and this is my story.

THE BEGINNING

I was always fascinated with the world outside our own, the unknown, and the idea of exploring the universe. I enjoy meditating on the mystery and infinity that is the Universe, and how the very thought of those realities can alter my perspective on life and my existence. Yet, I had never concerned myself with the actual history of human activity pertaining to Space Exploration. As an aspiring anthropologist my focus was always on people and culture and the earth. I soon realized that it is that evolution and culture that I study, which led to the amazing accomplishments and feats of humanity’s ascension into Space. I never really learned or absorbed the events, both monumental and tragic, that have occurred in the last 50 years. I had no clue.

At the mention of Buzz Aldrin, I was the one whose voice was heard going, “Buzz?”

I did not know about the Challenger

I could not even pronounce “NASA” correctly. I pronounce it like: “NawSa.”

I tried my hardest to pretend I knew what was going on, I nodded at conversations that I could not even keep up with, and I wondered why NASA would choose me, this clueless yet mesmerized 20-something violinist from LA. I did not even have a phone capable of twittering. I watched as intelligent, successful, passionate people connected all around me, and then connected to the world. I sat there with my ancient phone and felt lost. I felt I had invested so much time and energy on growing and becoming who I am, and now felt humbled by my lack of knowledge and stunted by my lack of advancement toward technology, and my dreams. However, although I started this journey with little expectations, I knew I would come out a changed person. I just had no idea how intensely drastic and amazing that change would be.

I started out far away from everyone, in seedy, cheesy Orlando, in a strange hotel. I felt giddy at having rented my own car for the first time, and happy that I was once again traveling alone. When I got a chance to get into my laptop and check twitter, which was still the old twitter by the way, I noticed all the tweets and updates from Tweetup attendees, and felt pings of regret, like time was running out and I was not having the enriching experience I should be having.

The first day of Tweetup I was late, almost didn’t make it, got lost, and forgot to charge my devices. I had not met anyone, nor had I been to the Visitor Center. I was dehydrated and hungry. I found a seat and realized that everyone around me was on their phone or laptop. I peeked and saw things that seemed foreign to me, like “tweetdeck,” and mini countdown clocks, and a live-streaming hat cam. People asked questions that boggled me. Despite my bad start, my life began to change right there. I found a new respect for technology, and I saw my dreams unfold and doors open as I noticed all that I had missed. The speeches I heard from astronauts and twitter filled me with gratitude. All around me I saw intelligence, thirst for knowledge, passion for space and life, and self-awareness. I saw so many young people. I saw how I could evolve. I saw my future.

The Launch delayed, and our Tour postponed. I was faced with the decision of being safe and taking my flight Tuesday, the next morning, or risking it all. Something told me that I had more to learn and experience. Something told me I just was not ready to leave. I had met someone in the media who I connected with instantly, and we agreed to meet later that night. I managed to acquire a few phone numbers from tweeters, and extended my car rental. That night, I checked out of my hotel in Orlando, packed all my stuff into my car, decided I would miss my flight the next morning, and went on to see where the Universe would take me. That night I took the red pill, entered the rabbit hole that would be this experience, and prepared for the mystery and vulnerability that was Wonderland. I called home and informed everyone that I was staying, and I had no clue what I was going to do.

VULNERABILITY AND PURIFICATION

Off I drove to Cocoa Beach, hoping I would be able to stay the night at this stranger’s hotel. That stranger was the next life-changing experience to happen to me. I shared a magical evening with him, my first ever real conversation with someone truly passionate about Space. He opened my eyes to the wonder and beauty of our history and future. He showed me interviews he did with NASA employees and Astronauts. We talked about life, our paths, and our journeys. I learned more about focus and achieving dreams, and he helped me clear my head, the perfect foundation for what was to come the next day at Tweetup. At midnight I walked barefoot into the vast Atlantic Ocean and starry sky, and allowed my heart and mind to open freely; I felt acceptance and warmth.

Then, I laughed as I sank into the luxurious warm ocean, each wave passing over me cleansing any negativity, insecurities, doubts, and unnecessary rationale from my mind and spirit. I covered myself with soft, moist, muddy earth and rinsed with the healing moonlit waters. I stared up into the night sky and looked up into space with a new understanding and appreciation for the stars above, and the luminous moon making its presence known, and I knew that men had walked there.

Just then it began to rain, the droplets of water mingling with my tears of joy and bliss. From that moment on, my Florida and Tweetup experience was never anything less than completely magical, enlightening, and utterly amazing.

The next morning he treated me to breakfast, and I soaked up the positive vibes and wisdom he had to give me. I cried and thanked him, and when we parted I felt he had been in my life for that brief period for a purpose, and I felt I was saying Goodbye to a cherished friend. I drove through the rain to Kennedy Space Center, determined to experience the Visitor Center before the Tour began. Excitement struck me as I saw the tops of rockets against the sun in the distance, and I knew I had to go there.

TRANSITION AND WONDER

The Rocket Garden was the defining moment in my transition from space “newbie” to space “Geek.” I will never forget, the rockets getting closer as I walked purposefully towards them, their presence growing stronger, and I could hear a thick drum beat in my ear as people and crowds seemed to part, and the rocket peaks grew taller as I neared them. Standing at the bottom of the first rocket I approached, I gazed up at it with reverence and respect, and felt once again humbled and amazed. I turned on my digital camera and recorded that moment, and you can see the emotion in my eyes and the disbelief in my face. I felt silly and ashamed for my lack of attention and respect for NASA and Space Exploration. I left for the tweetup tour a new person, one dedicated to learning all I could, and then spreading the enthusiasm to others, including my little brother. My timing could not have been more perfect.

First stop on the tour was the Vehicle Assembly Building. The path fate had laid out for me seemed predestined and carefully calculated, as each event leading up to the next had the perfect amount of impact and escalation to bring me to all new levels of understanding and being. It began with my instincts, was fused by a magical conversation, was lit by the Rocket Garden, and had now reached an almost overwhelming blaze and energy as my excitement for this new world and appreciation grew. At the same time, I could feel myself becoming renewed. I could hardly process it, but I let it happen.

The VAB was the closest I will ever get to the Death Star, I always said. It was incredible in there. At the time, I still had no idea what anyone was talking about, so I set myself on soaking in the visuals and doing my best to keep up. I did feel as if I was standing in an ancient and sacred temple of some sorts, one that has held monumental and precious machines that hold more meaning then I could even fathom at the time. This is what we should be idolizing, wondrous vehicles to the outside world created by the minds and hands of humans with endless vision, brazen tenacity, and courageous endurance. I looked at the speechless faces around me, as childlike wonder and humility filled the air and a common, silent admiration unified us all. Attempts to capture the presence and intensity of the VAB went futile, as nothing could appropriately express the energy and epic immensity of it all.

My ignorance regarding space exploration was a gift at that moment. I stared up into the intricate scaffolding in curiosity, feeling as if I had indeed entered Wonderland, as the Mystery overcame me. I knew nothing of the men and women who created this reality, but I knew they were my heroes. I knew nothing of the machines that were assembled in this building, but I knew that they meant more than anything to me at that moment. I knew nothing of space history, but the shuttle banners and writing on the walls told me that it was an odyssey of grand significance. I knew nothing, but I felt everything.

Riding on this high, I went on to experience the runway and structures and buildings, still mysterious to me, but my comprehension formulating and working the more I saw. It was the Apollo Reenactment and Saturn V that sealed my fate as a life-long space enthusiast. When I heard Kennedy’s words for the first time in my life, “We Choose to Go to the Moon!” I cried tears of triumphant and appreciation. I looked to my right and saw another with tears in his eyes. I felt I had lived my life missing something so incredulous and important: Our journey into Space. One speech has so much power and inspired so many to dream and venture beyond. The Apollo reenactment was overwhelming, and I felt I had truly been transported back into time to the moment of the launch, feeling the fear, nervousness, joy, and victory that everyone felt then. Then, exiting to the right, through my tears I saw the monstrous entity that is the Saturn V. For a moment I could not breathe, I could not walk, all I could do was stop in my tracks and stare. I let out an audible gasp and almost dropped by camera. I called everyone I knew back home but no one answered. I looked around for tweeters but did not see any. Finally, I took a seat on the floor and just stared at the end of the Saturn V, and for a moment it was just me and the enormous rocket, sharing a quiet moment, a moment of wisdom and enlightenment. I grew in that moment, I became a new person, and I felt the kind of emotion that can not be expressed in words. No, this is a feeling that can only be expressed through my violin.

Finally, the time came to see the Shuttle, the climax of escalating events. I truly felt like a child playing “Pirates,” on a hunt to find the ultimate treasure. As our bus neared the shuttle, excitement filled the air. This had to be what it feels like to find treasure. The Discovery’s monumental presence demanded the highest respect and reverence. It truly is a treasure, buried under layers and layers of mental capacity, imagination, dreams, and skilled human hands. I used all my energy and every ounce of feeling to soak up that Once-In-A-Lifetime moment. The opportunity to be so close to the shuttle is so rare, if not nearly impossible. I gazed at every inch of it, took in every bit of energy it projected, and connected with the emotion and excitement of the passionate people all around me. When we had to leave Discovery, it was like parting from an old friend. I felt nostalgic and infatuated as the bus departed, yet filled with gratitude.

THE RED PILL

The tour ended, and fear and insecurity began to creep its way back into my mind. Where would I stay? What should I do? Luckily, my petty fears were blurred by the purification and high that resulted from my incredible day. A very special and perceptive tweeter had noticed my lost and lone status and began to talk to me and introduce me to others. By doing so he triggered the next epic half of my Florida Space Odyssey. I had soaked up and appreciated the world of Space and technology, but that was only the beginning. I had much more to learn, and it would be from the people. I am forever grateful to him for his action to bring me into the mix, as I am unsure if I would have had the courage to infiltrate the already bonding tweetup group, after having stayed to myself most of the time. That same perceptive person would later give me the gift of a memorable and cherished conversation that also changed me and inspired me. I had seen tweeters wearing shirts for houses people had congregated at to rent, and I knew people were going home and spots may open. Soon I heard about a tweetup “logistics” meeting at the Big House. I had an address written on my hand, and a couple nameless numbers in my phone. I had a rental car loaded with my stuff, and I was standing in an emptying parking lot, the magic and energy of everyone’s excitement still floating in the air, the glow of the shuttle peering back at me from the distance. I could spend money on a hotel or sleep in my car, but I knew what I had to do. I had no choice; I had to go to the Big House. There was more treasure awaiting me there.

My 30 minute journey to the Big House was one of overcoming fears, mental conversation, and breaking down of insecurities. It really is silly, looking back. Truthfully I felt ashamed of my ignorance in regards to space. I almost turned back and changed my mind several times. First, I could not locate the address in my GPS and panicked. Before I could chicken out I called one of the numbers and received directions which I quickly scrawled on my leg, as I could not find paper. I almost missed the exit and felt lost, and wondered if I should just go to a hotel. Fate would not let me get off that easy. I found the street and parked. After gathering my composure and courage I started toward the house, but was stopped by a resident who could not get through due to my horrible parking job. I was embarrassed and now hesitant to continue, but did so anyway after a harsh mental lecture while sitting in my car for 5 minutes. I rang the doorbell and there was no answer. Inside I could hear laughing and talking and excitement. Intimidated, I turned to walk away but then with my last ounce of courage knocked on the door. I waited and was in mid-turn when the door was opened, and I was let into the Big House.

Even after I was inside, I wanted to turn back, as I felt like an outsider, but it was the Mothership who welcomed me and changed everything. She got me a drink, offered me a spot to sleep, and even told me I could do laundry. Her friendly and warm presence touched me deeply and sealed my destiny as a Big House resident, which unfolded a series of experiences I would never forget. That night was a blur of wine, socializing, conversation, and realization. I was touched by the unification of everyone as they worked together to make dreams of seeing launches happen. I admired the dedication and fervor these people had, and I felt lucky to have found the kind of people I always been seeking, people with spirit, fire and lust for life and knowledge.

LEARNING FROM THE PEOPLE

My first night at the Big House, I was up until 4 or 5 in the morning having my next life-changing conversation with a fellow Intuitive and in general: amazing human being. We found much in common in regards to perspective on life and world travel, and I felt utterly inspired and uplifted by his words and wisdom. Throughout my experiences I had more conversations with him which continued to exhilarate me and provoke new ideas, thoughts, and focuses.

The next day I watched a disciplined and hard-working student work on her physics homework diligently. As I trolled around on facebook, I stole glances at her seemingly impossible and complex looking work, and admired her perseverance and commitment. I also found out that she had delayed her graduation for the launch, which made me see even more how important and significant this event was. Hearing that is what made me decide that no matter what, no matter what I sacrifice and how much I go broke, I am sticking it out until the end. I will see this launch if it happens, or risk everything to try. As I watched her spend hours on this work, I thought to myself: “Why can’t I learn physics?” It was then that I realized how much I have been limiting myself by placing restrictions on myself, justifying my laziness, and accepting deeply rooted programming. Having always believed I was a so-called “right brainer” whose intelligence is limited to arts, music, and culture, I now knew that was Baloney, and I knew that if I so desired I could go learn math and physics and understand it well.

Wednesday held many more surprises. I witnessed beautiful poetry from the Mothership, which brought tears to my eyes. I viewed enchanting and mesmerizing magic tricks. I read the blogs and writing of the people who unknowingly taught me. I sat out on the dock and watched dolphins swim as I embraced the mystery of the days to come, and the wisdom that seemed to lurk around every corner. I was simply a sponge, soaking up any and all bits of information, enlightenment, humanity, and understanding that I could. Just when I thought my mind could not process it quickly enough, I had the opportunity later than night to hear the wise words of a truly amazing Individual: Astronaut Scott Palazynski, who traveled to space 5 times and climbed Everest. Hearing him speak of overcoming fear and accomplishing amazing feats even through significant obstacles such as injury and disaster, was inspiring to say the least. Watching people around me gaze in admiration at a man who has reached such capabilities and achievements through unwavering determination, made me immensely grateful for the company I was in. We live in a world where celebrities and socialites are idolized, and it was a breath of fresh air to see people celebrate a human of true quality, for reasons that sparked fire in their hearts and provided fuel for their own personal obstacles and journeys.

Yet my Wednesday was far from over. That night I had too much emotion and love to process, and the only way I could express this to the universe was through my violin. I quietly slipped away and tuned my strings, eager to find out what would come from them once I would lay my bow on them. I stood out on the dock with the breeze kissing my flesh and flowing through my hair, the salty water purifying my soul, and my emotions begging to be released. My violin, my soul’s extension and the avatar of my thoughts, began to sing, its clear notes ringing through the night air. Alone in the dark I cried through my instrument, my fingers falling where they desired, controlled and manipulated by the chaos and peace that filled my heart. Waves slapped at the dock, providing a subtle beat for my music, and the starry night sky welcomed my gaze as I stood in a trance, revealing all that I felt and all that I wanted to become.

I completed my phrase of music, and released my bow from the strings, as the breeze let me know that the Universe had heard me. The most extraordinary moment came next, the moment when I heard applause and clapping from behind me, and I turned to see a group of people watching me and capturing my special moment with their devices. I immediately felt so grateful that my moment did not disappear into the night, and that instead it was shared. I knew that by hearing my music and spirit sing, they too felt what I felt, and they too understood what I was trying to express. I knew that I had contributed something to these people, although I did not know how. I just knew that it was important and special that I was playing my violin there at the Big House, after the epic day that we experienced together.

I continued to play, their energy and presence changing my music and tone as I felt their warmth. Migrating inside the house, another amazing human being took out a guitar, and we began to Jam. It was beyond words. Our energies danced and we vibed on the moment and experiences, listening to each other’s voices in the music and allowing each to be heard and expressed. Then the melodies became one as we entered a world where time stood still. The infinite, vast Universe I had spent the day admiring collapsed into a brief moment of cherished exchange, between two people sharing music and exposing their humanity. From the spectacular vastness of Space from which our miraculous existence emerged, a brief moment in millions of years of history made itself known, stopped time, and left a legacy in the minds of all present.

The rest of that night was a blur of laughter, hilarity, and fried pickles. The next morning held the news of another Launch delay. For hours everyone united and scrambled to adjust their travel plans, helping each other as best as they could. My jam partner helped me drop off my rental car, and the way back even more good conversation ensued. Everyone I met and every conversation I had seemed to be just another step and another clue towards realization, opening my mind, and embracing the hearts, journeys, and minds of others. That night held more festivities, hilarity, and conversation as we were all sure that the launch would happen the next day: Friday.

BEAUTY AND ENLIGHTENMET

I was awoken early Friday morning with excitement and eagerness. Everyone hustled to get ready, pack food, and be on our way to see the launch. I felt overwhelmed with giddiness and happiness, and around me I could feel the energetic passion of everyone ready to see the moment we had been waiting for and sacrificing for. The way to the Press Area we saw signs for the launch, we waved to others on their way, and we recorded the drive. We left the car with our stuff and bounced towards the countdown clock, counting down the hours until the launch. We barely blinked and looked away, but when we looked back at the clock it began counting up. Still hopeful and unsuspecting, we made our way towards the tent. First I spotted a face which held such disappointment and grief, and then I heard the word, “Leak.” Then I heard the word, “Crack.” Soon our high had unraveled and we went from excited, to hopeful, to doubtful, to Fail. The Launch was scrubbed.

Out there by the clock now counting upwards, with the glorious shuttle in the distance, harsh reality set in as the Discovery Flag was pulled down from its post. You could feel the hearts sinking all around, and visages everywhere held back no emotion as we tried to process the fact that it was Over. We hugged and cried, and embraced the last remnants of the tweetup in hopes that we could be healed. We questioned Dan Tani the Astronaut and found it in our disappointed hearts to laugh at his hilarious take on space travel. In between tweets of sadness there were tweets of quotes. We hung out with Robonaut more and took pictures at the clock. Finally, I think we all realized that as we stood together there, the true significance and importance that this event held. I think we all looked back at our sacrifices, emptying bank accounts, and week of launch delays, and we saw clearly what had happened. I think we all saw ourselves in a new light, having been renewed and impacted by the week. I think we looked around and looked inward, and saw that a monumental change had occurred.

NASA Tweetup was imperative to the future of Space exploration. Our little group of 150, and then 80, and then less, held so much more power than we can even imagine. By providing this experience, and by the mystery of such a perfectly balanced group, NASA has sent out in to the world an army of space evangelists to carry on and advance our society beyond anything we have now. They took me, an unsuspecting, distracted 20-something musician from LA, and transformed me into a person who will spread the word and encourage people of all ages to support and embrace space travel, in addition to inspiring others with my own newfound passion and knowledge. They took me, someone completely clueless, and put me in with the most genuine and non-judgmental people to teach me and guide me. One night I admitted to everyone that I simply had no idea what they were talking about. I was tired of nodding and smiling and pretending. Upon hearing my confused tone inquire as to who Buzz was, space geeks gladly and openly taught me about NASA, history, rockets, and space. I will never forget getting a crash course, people who stayed up all night until 5AM talking to me about space and technology and history. I drifted off to sleep to the sound of their passionate and nonjudgmental voices and dreamed of stars and galaxies.

I began this journey with the simple goal of wanting to travel alone, having just turned 25, and with an urge to “get away” after having turned a quarter century old. I knew nothing about space and saw this tweetup as an avenue and opportunity to escape. For all I knew, it was a slipup of NASA to choose me for this event, over someone more worthy. 2010 was an intense year of change and growth for me, and I wanted to escape to process it. What I didn’t know, was that this trip was not just a grand finale for a triumphant year of productivity and growth, as I had previously thought. Instead, my year of 2010 was all preparation for this final lesson and epic escalation into my potential and awareness. It had all led up to this. Now, a new chapter of my life has opened, with endless horizons and infinite potential. I have revealed my dreams of anthropology, subculture, writing, music, travel, and more to these people, and I found people who believed in me. I found people who believed in what I said and what I was to become. Their faith in me and their encouragement and wisdom has given me clarity, focus, and a renewed sense of life.

I am ready to write books and teach the world. I am ready to explore my dreams and be successful. I want to travel the world and become a space nomad, sharing in this subculture which revolves around advancement and human capabilities. I want to inspire, mentor, and encourage others, especially the youth. I have recognized my potential and all that I can do, and with the support and wisdom of my new friends and mentors, along with the life-changing experience NASA gave me, I Will Do It.

The night of the scrubbed launch we celebrated at the Big House. Although we were not celebrating a shuttle ascending into space, we were still celebrating a launch. We had each experienced our own personal launch, into the unknown realms of our minds, into the atmosphere of our growth, into the space of our future, waiting to be seized and embraced.

Off the Grid communities

In preparation for my upcoming anthropological adventures on Off-The-Grid Communities, I wanted to share with you all this intriguing interview and article about one man's story.

Starting next month, I will begin taking trips to Off-The-Grid communities in an effort to understand the culture, or subculture these people have created. Until I can travel and make more connections, I will be starting at the nearby community: Slab City. There I will go, with my violin, to create a haven for my curiosities and become accepted by the community. As a true anthropologist, I will not be an observer from the sidelines, but instead will try and become a participant. I will not truly be able to find what I seek until I can actually live off the grid for a period of time, at least the better part of a year. When that time comes, I will be ready to live a minimal lifestyle with little connection to the reality and world I have called home for 25 years.

I often fantasize about living a natural, minimal lifestyle with little possessions. But on the other hand, I dream of exploring space, and a world where we advance exponentially, where tomorrow becomes today, and there are no limits to what we can do.

According to this article, the purpose is to find balance. But is that possible? Both worlds are extreme. Can you live a simple, natural life, while still keeping up with advancements and supporting future endeavors? Is this new subculture of "wildcrafters" going to hinder our success if it continues to spread infectiously? It seems to me that only positive, wonderful consequences can come from throwing out the clutter in your life and living a more peaceful existence. Yet if you dream of space exploration, technology, and he advancement of society, how does this way of living support that?

THIS is the balance I wish to achieve. I would love to have both, but How?

My favorite excerpt from this interview is when he states:

"
It was a beautiful thing, all that simplicity, because there was this whole new freedom. In my simplicity there was actually expansion because if you take away the clutter, you're left with this wide-open canvas of creativity and possibility. Those are times where you can find your own inspiration, your own purpose and authenticity, and express yourself from there. And it may be for other people that they would go into that situation and think about it completely differently than I did. But I think that once you've gone into this well of solitude and silence, it's hard to just live a superficial life. You'd maybe continue in the same path but do things a little differently."

Jam session + poetry under the stars

Open mic, but without a mic and sign up sheet. Under a beautiful mural at the Beach, a perfect breeze and a glorious Moon.

Souls from all walks of life came together to celebrate the moment, the expression, and the unique energy formed by emotion and creativity. Most importantly, an openness to learn and to grow and explore.

There were Djembes, drums, guitars, and violins. There were troubled words, and words of inspiration and joy. There was laughter, and even tears. It was intimate and close.

Earlier I had talked to my new friend on the phone and we both decided that the night held magical things, that we would create for ourselves a warm circle of energy. Its amazing that it was manifested itself its our lives.

Humanity.

Sadistic and selfish

Yet these moments happen, and you see that humans are such emotional and soulful creatures.

All of these amazing experiences are a result of a door opening, a door that was opened by overcoming my fears. So many adventures and opportunities are available to me now because I have freed myself from the prison that I clung to for so long: My fears.

Time and worry melted away in this place, in this circle of warmth that we created tonight. It was a place where nobody twittered, but instead lived in the moment. We went on well past Midnight, the peacefulness of the night a soundtrack to our perfect moment.

As the last of the candle flickered, its fire fading into the darkness, a slow, yearning melody played from my violin, as we all felt the approaching emptiness that would follow our separation.

*************************************

If you are interested in attending this magical event, it will now be occurring every Wednesday Evening in Long Beach. Following the Open Mic night at the infamous Portfolio's Cafe on 4th and Junipero, we all go down the street to Cherry and Ocean. Down the Bluff there is a big mural, and that is where we will be. Or, just follow the sound of the music. 10PM - Midnight.

Bring your words, music, or just your positive energy.

We Welcome All.

VERY interesting article on Subculture!

WOW had you any idea there were so many Subcultures, especially among our youth?

This article is incredible at describing the various "Tribes" that are common in young people, including Emo, ravers, and shit I have never even heard of.

The NEW Subcultures

I need to make friends in each of these Subcultures. I need to see what this is about and record my findings.

The Emo, The SuperGeek, The Jock Dolly, The Gangsta, The Punk Lite, The Glamazon, The Hipster, and The Techno Boho.

How to Enjoy a non-religious Christmas!

Christmas is for Everyone, not just Christians or religious people. It is simply a Cultural event which celebrates the Winter solstice. It is a compilation of stories, myths, and legends. It is an accumulation of historical facts, some true and some distorted. It is a Festival and a celebration. As long as you look at Christmas from an Anthropological Perspective, you will not need to cringe at the site of a nativity scene, or feel left out of all of the festivities.

For me, Christmas does not represent the Birth of christ. Actually, according to the History channel and Wikipedia, both pretty legit forms of knowledge, Christmas is about much, much more than the birth of Jesus. For me, Christmas is a celebration of Winter, of the season, of the end of the year, and of our Culture. It seems to me that we work our ass off the whole year long, and by the end we all get to just be nice to one another and enjoy time with our families. Then, we get a New year and a fresh start.

I do not consider myself Religious, but I respect people's different beliefs. Most of the time I do not understand them but I try to remember that it is Human Nature to think up stories to explain the mystery of life, and that without Blind faith, many people would be unable to function in their daily lives.

Here is what I love about Christmas:

1. MUSIC: As a musician I tend to be drawn towards the beauty and emotion in music, and many Holiday tunes seem to embrace those factors. I have to say I Love "Oh Holy Night" despite it's strong lyrics. I will proudly belt out the lyrics to "Oh come all ye faithful" just because they represent the season and the tune has been ingrained into my head, but that does not mean I am betraying my own belief system (or lack thereof.)

Religious or not, the catchy tunes of Christmas appeal to me. It is pretty crazy how one can hear "Carol of the Bells" after Christmas and instead of feeling haunted by the chilling, familiar melody they feel disgusted. After all, Christmas is over. How amusing that there are certain age old, famous tunes that one can ONLY hear during a certain 25 days of the year. Try playing them too soon or too late, and they will completely lose their magic.

2. LIGHTS: Nothing brings out my inner child like Christmas Lights do. Every season I patiently wait for my first glimpse of twinkling cheer. This season, it was a simple strand of white lights outlining a window sill that set me off. I screamed with delight at that lone strand, and I knew in my heart that the Holidays had begun.

Lucky for me, I had a Disneyland Annual Pass. Excitement over a lone strand of white lights is one thing, but the Magical World of Disney is Orgasmic in its Power. I actually sob with joy as I stare at the intricately beautiful Castle, the Brilliantly decorated and massive Tree on Main street, and the glammed up "Small World." Then, after an amazing Fireworks show, us Californians get a small taste of a "White Christmas" as snow showers the crowds.

How can anyone despise a time of year when the world around us is brilliantly lit and colorful? I mean isn't it just amazing?

3. FEELING IN THE AIR: Yes, it exists. Some sort of unified oneness that seems to put a skip in your step and a smile on your face. If it didn't exist, then how could there be so many Songs centered around it? How come I keep hearing from people about "that feeling." Just take a look at Twitter and Facebook and you will see that it consumes us all.

Christmas is the closest we get to "One Love."

4. FAMILY: If it were not for the Holiday season, many people would go years and years without seeing family or loved ones. It is great to reconnect and remember those we love or grew up with, despite the past. Sometimes issues get resolved at Christmas, and sometimes they drag on until the next year. Either way, it is a chance, an opportunity for us to remember what is important and let our emotions run free.

5. THE KIDS: Because that is what it is really about. I do not mean just the young kids, I mean the "kid" in all of us. People who go through life like robots suddenly light up this time of year. Adults get together and sing songs, and we all get excited over lights and trees and candy canes. For once we can let go and allow some magic in to our lives. Adults are just as excited about opening a gift and tracking Santa, even if they do not admit it or if they are "just doing it for the Kids." It is this time of year we feel that Excitement that we only feel as a child, or during certain epic moments in life.

If you are not a religious person, its OK. Christmas is for you too. Christmas is for Everyone.

Music and Expression

The American Music Award show was on this past weekend. I ventured out of my cave this morning to find complete outrage over a few particular performances, and just an abundance of opinions and negative remarks floating around.

When did we become such a judgmental and close-minded society? When did Music become an entity which is defined and categorized by rigid rules? When did self-expression become Taboo?

I cringe when I hear someone say that another's music is crap, or "it sucks." That is simply their perspective, and their interpretation of the sound.

Each performance has a message, and for each person that message is different. For some, the message is not for them.

It is just sounds. Words, emotion, and thoughts in the form of sound.

It derives from our yearning to express more than just common dialogue and words. It comes from deep within, from our creativity, from our imprisoned emotions.

It is that Human gift to Feel and to Yearn and to Love.

New Breed of Goth developing overseas

The next generations are taking the Goth Subculture to a whole new level.

Alienated youth strive for a more peaceful and positive purpose, while claiming their dark identities.

What is the new definition of "Gothic Subculture?" Is it merely dressing in Black and maintaining a "dark" aura? Or is it a deeper philosophy?

Here is an article on Goth Youth in Singapore, using their identities to promote social good and make a difference in the world.

Those who are alienated by society, are using their subculture to improve society. Interesting!

Cuddle Parties

Humans crave affection and comfort. No one can deny the waves of pleasure that ensues when being "spooned" or cuddled.

In major cities across the country, a phenomenon called "cuddle Parties" has been satisfying the needs of people of all ages.

The below description was taken from the Cuddle party Website.

What a Cuddle Party Is: A structured, safe workshop on boundaries, communication, intimacy and affection. A drug and alcohol-free way to meet fascinating people in a relaxing environment. A laboratory where you can experiment with what makes you feel safe and feel good.

This playful, fun workshop has been a place for people to rediscover non-sexual touch and affection, a space to reframe assumptions about men and women, and a great networking event to meet new friends, roommates, business partners and significant others.

Can Cuddle Party restore your faith in humanity? It just might. But at the very least, you'll have a great time, and leave feeling relaxed and inspired.

-------------------------

Cuddle Parties contain rules such as "No Means No," and "Clothes stay on." Clearly, these are non-sexual, positive events meant to provide a safe and comfortable environment for those who are craving a little human touch in their lives.

Cuddle Parties provide an escape for people. They re-energize and rejuvenate people, and leave them with positive vibes and a great feeling. According to testimonies, the parties are healing and provide people with that bit of intimacy that we need without having to commit to a relationship or sex.

Most other cultures are more "touchy feely" than ours. In some European cultures a kiss is used to greet, and in many primitive cultures people spend a lot of time dancing with each other and being intimate, be it physical or not. Human intimacy is not a priority in American culture, and in fact we have turned in to a tense, cold, and distant society, suspicious of those around us and hesitant to touch or even speak to one another. What results is a void and a longing for affection.

Many may fill this void with drugs or alcohol, while others may find themselves deeply effected emotionally by such a lack of intamacy. People often feel lonely even when surounded by friends and peers and people who love them. Others simply become cold and distant and continue to pass their cultural programming to future generations, creating a society of strangers and suspicion. Some people may participate in casual sex to try and achieve what they are seeking, but orgasm does not equal affection.

While many may view these cuddle parties as goofy, cheesy, or weird, I see it as a healthy outlet for people and a way to bring human intimacy in to your life without the pressure of committment. In addition, I believe it would be healthy and liberating for people to be intimate with others, just for the sake of comforting other human beings. We are all people and we should all celebrate our similarities and differences.

We all know what it is like to feel pain, just as we all know how good it feels to have an arm around you or simply connect energies with a big bear hug.

Newly discovered subcultures to check out, going Undercover

Zombie fighters

Live Action Role Play

Real life Super Heroes

Trekkies (Nothing new, but I just decided to explore)

Urban Spelunking

Free Runners

-------

I have my work cut out for me, but a very interesting life ahead of me indeed.

------

Why do I believe I can accomplish a great project or book about Subculture? What makes me feel I can do better than those out there? Well I still have a lot of reading and checking out to do. I went on Amazon and I took a look at the following books, and then I found reasons why mine will be awesome and more appealing. This is based on description and reviews, but I still need to read them. Here are a few:

Subculture: The Meaning of Style, 2nd Edition New Accents Library (The New Accent) (Hardcover)

by DICK HEBDIGE

----This book appears to be focusing on style and fashion. The author bases his knowledge on history and observation.

I will look at subculture from a participant point of view, and actually experience the life of those involved. Rather than focusing on fashion, i will focus on the human aspect, and what draws people to their world of choice

Subculture: The Meaning of Style (New Accents) (Paperback)

by Dick Hebdige

-----Appears to contain insightful and intelligent content, but focuses on Post war subculture, mostly related to music. I will be exploring subcultures that are rarely heard of, many of which have little to do with music or war.

Inside Subculture: The Postmodern Meaning of Style (Dress, Body, Culture) (Paperback)

by David Muggleton

---Focuses on Style and is written "almost exclusively for specialists in the field."This is also a book whose arguments are built off those in the above book by Dick Hebdige.

After Subculture: Critical Studies in Contemporary Youth Culture (Paperback)

by Andy Bennett (

---Appears to be a short book, only 256 pages. How in depth can you get with 256 pages? Looks to be just an overview.

Subculture: The Fragmentation of the Social (Paperback)

by Professor Chris Jenks

---This book looks very insightful and in-depth, with extensive analysis pertaining to history and philosophy. This book looks truly interesting, but the author is again writing as an outsider, not as an insider. Very scholarly and great for academic purposes.

The Call of the Weird: Travels in American Subcultures (Hardcover)

by Louis Theroux (Author)

----This book looks great and I love how the author actually interviews and hangs out with his "subjects." He appears to have a fantastic and ironic sense of humor, and he includes quotes and personal experience. Also, he explores a variety of subcultures, some of which are not well known at all. I like the following quote and conclusion: "On the list of qualities necessary to humans trying to make out way through life, truth scores fairly low...in the end, feeling alive is more important than telling the truth....We are instruments for feeling, faith, energy, emotion, significance, belief, but not really truth."

Embracing the Darkness; Understanding Dark Subcultures (Paperback)

by Corvis Nocturnum

--This one is definitely more of what I am going for. The author is a "dark" member of society who explores his world with the kind of curiosity, seeker of truth type of mindset that intrigues me. This book only focuses on Dark subculture.

---------------------

Again, I have not read these books yet. I have a long journey ahead of me. Even if no book or work comes out of this, I will still have lived a life walking many different paths. I will still have met interesting people, and I would still have a great repertoire on humanity and the many facets of our world and culture.

Most...almost ALL people who I talk to do not understand what it is I am trying to accomplish. Perhaps I am not even clear.

I am a studyer of Anthropology. An Anthropologist is a direct participant in the cultures they study. They learn from those they observe, and they actively immerse themselves in the culture to which they have commited themselves to. The above authors have not done this. I will.

I will become friends with these people. I will participate in their rituals or ceremonies or activities. I will use their slang and terminology. I will dress as a medievel night and live action role play. I will donate my blood to vampires and watch Star Trek marathons if I have to. I will prepare for zombie battles and explore abandoned buildings.

When you observe people from the outside, your knowledge is limited. You will only hear or know what they want you to know. When you are ONE with them, when they trust and relate to you, that is when you really find out what its all about.

Its the same as undercover cops. You do not really know what is going on until you are a participant in the action.

I will be going undercover, and I will share my experiences with the world and hopefully spread a deeper appreciation for the diverse and varied interests and desires of humanity.

Reflections from the street

The people of the Free World are truly people to Respect. The people of the Free World are survivors. They do not depend on anyone. They are completely. Free. They are strong minded. They are more in touch with themselves then most of the planet. They may seem crazy, but the reality is that WE are the fools. We who depend on technology and matarial items for happiness. We who couldnt survive one day out in the streets. We who cry at the first sign of dissapointment, and who give up after rejection.

We, who Fall when we stumble.

In this society, we direct our respect in all the wrong places.

We worship those who smile and make millions. We admire those whose beauty makes our jaw drop. We Respect those who wear suits and drive expensive cars. We devote much of our precious life to admiring these people.......but the true survivors dont get so much as a glance.
Thats OK though, because I am sure they prefer it that way.

I met a man today, named OHANA. All he owned was a bike and a pair of pants. I spoke to him for 3 hours. I will never forget what he said.

"I am richer then I could ever imagine."

Nobody is truly rich, until they are Free.

The Invisible Children and the Joy of Life.

Do not misunderestimate the opportunities of everyday life. Seize every chance to the expansion of your mind.

I bounced off to class today with my R2D2 backpack and breathed in the fresh air. As I walked under the trees to my class I thought about all of the things I wish to accomplish and all of my dreams and desires.

I left my class in a state of shock and despair, void of hope for humanity and the joy of life. I was aware that this feeling was temporary, but I allowed it to feel my soul and overwhelm my mind. I cried all the way home. I snapped at my mom upon my return, and I cursed the world under my breath. My entire demeanor and attitude had changed.

In my Cultural Anthropology class we viewed a film called "Invisible Children." This was a documentary done by 3 very young American adults, just on a mission to understand...a mission for the truth. They traveled to Sudan with No plan and some film. What they documented and discovered there is nothing new, and an issue that many of us know of vaguely. This documentary focused on the child warriors. These children, hundreds of thousands, are abducted and trained as killing machines. They know of nothing but death and murder. The rest of the children, who live in utter terror of the Rebels, spend every waking moment of their life trying to survive. It is a Holocaust going on right now in this world, with immense suffering, and terrible pain. I can not even begin to imagine the fear that these people feel every day. In the meantime, precious culture and tradition is lost, while Lives are disposed of daily. Life consists of walking, hiding, sleeping. I just watched in disbelief at the images before me, feeling so much despair. It took every effort not to cry in class, and I wondered why everyone seemed so....unaffected by it. Perhaps some are better at hiding their emotion than others.

I left class thinking, I GOT to go save those people, I have to help them, I have to do something! But what am I thinking? I am no superhero. Yet something inside of me tells me that I can help those people, I can help someone. I can go there and change everything. That is what I feel, however unrealistic it is.

I remember my friend Ndume and I were talking one day, and we were talking about the purpose of Life. The conclusion of that particular conversation is that the purpose of Life is to simply Be Happy. The Purpose of Life is as simple as: To Find Joy in Living.

At the end of this film, the children were laughing, smiling, and dancing. These same children were hiding in fear the night before, sobbing over the death of their friends or family, and struggling to find a bit of food and shelter only hours before. Yet they were still able to Smile. How fucking Amazing is that? That is why I am thinking the Ultimate Purpose of Life is to find Joy. Even in the midst of a war in the most tragic of times, during Genocide and child killers, those people still find something to make them Smile. They still find the joy in Life, hiding somewhere between all the misery and suffering. They still dance and have music, and find someone to love and to care about.

I wish I could be there just to Hold one of them, just to caress their head and let them use me as a pillow instead of the hard, wet ground. I wish I could grant their wish of becoming a teacher, I wish I could keep them from having to hide even for just one day. I feel so far away, so helpless.
How can I sleep tonight without feeling such guilt and disgust at the pillow I need for my head and the mattress under my back? When I turned on this very computer, a luxury in itself, the first thing I saw was an article about how Heidi Klums legs are insured for 7.8 MILLION dollars. After viewing those children, some of who did not even Have legs at all, I felt such incredible disgust. How is the world this way?

Joy is so easily found in My Life, while others must desperately search for it. Fear is so rare in my Life, while others Live in it.

Those precious children. Their faces will haunt me in my Dreams tonight, and my helplessness will continue to overwhelm me.

However, I know that those children, who can find a way to smile despite their suffering, would not want me to despair. I must continue to find joy...for them. If I, who has everything, can not smile, then what hope is there for Life, if the purpose of Life is to find Happiness? What other purpose can there be? People Live to Live, they live to hide and run, tell me, what is their purpose? Our Lives are not leading up to anything big, any one moment that will be our Purposeful moment. We are small and insignifiant, yet we have the Power to make our Lives bigger than us. It is just a long journey. Your Destination? Death. This is a positive thing. This is relieving. This allows us to enjoy the small moments, like the smell of autumn in the morning, or a brief connection with a stranger.

Or, a joyful Dance in the middle of a small dirt road in Sudan, where for a moment, all suffering is forgotten, and fear is sacrificed for the sake of a Radiant Smile.

Culture VS. Subculture

Culture is for the masses; Subculture is for the few
Culture is Shared; Subculture is discovered

Culture is passed through generations; Subculture defies tradition

Culture is learned; Subculture is embraced

Culture is accepted; Subculture is rejected
Culture is a guideline; Subculture is an escape

Culture is a Lifestyle; Subculture is Living

Culture is our surroundings, represents values as a society, and is a rulebook for being accepted into mainstream living. Subculture is for the Individual, it is a place for discovering your most intense desires, and it is whatever you want it to be. Those who gather together in the subcultures of our world are those who seek comfort and acceptance for those parts of them that are special or deviant. They seek like-minded people who may understand them and relate to them. Subculture is not just for the deviant, it is for the intelligent, talented, lonely, desperate, and enlightened.

Daily life is your culture. Your desires, and those thoughts that drift through your mind right before your eyes reach the doorways of dreamworld at night, that is what creates subculture.

Why is Subculture important to humans and our world? Well first lets ask, what makes humans different from animals, or any other living organisms? We need more then just a guideline for living, to actually Live and find happiness. Most Humans have complex and varied needs that go beyond eating and paying bills. These needs can be sexual, emotion-related, Dark, light, or even hobbies or lifestyle activities, such as gaming. Most humans strive for something beyond the daily grind of working and surviving. To appease this need for something more, many turn to Religion. The rest of us, we turn to Subculture.

What kind of Subcultures are there? I plan on investigating a great deal of subculture. There are endless possibilities, not only here in Los Angeles, but around the world.

Below are some examples, just to name a few of the more well known:

Sexual needs: BDSM, vampire, furries, swingers, leather

Alter egos, cosplay, and pretend: Renessaince junkies, pirate, wizard, furries, superhero

Dark: Vampire, satanism (various), goth, bdsm, body altering

Music subculture: Punk, hip-hop, indie, emo, and endless amounts of "sub-genres" which each has their own following and style

Tech: Gamers, computer gamers, hackers

While many Subcultures are more secretive and elusive (I.e. Vampire, bdsm,) others are more integrated into mainstream society (Gaming, music.) What they all have in common, is that like-minded people with the same intense interests gather together. They tend to have the following qualities:

-Their own slang and terminology (in some cases their own language, such as the Trekkies and Lord of the Rings fanatics.)

-Style or a common factor for dress and look, some have full on costuming
-A common perspective or idea. For instance certain genres or origins of Punk Rock are derived from anger at the government. Cosplay and Costumers tend to embrace their role as a realistic one, and sometimes take on the personality and perspective of their characters. BDSM and swingers tend to have sexually free outlooks on life, and people of the Goth and emo culture tend to have a dark and somewhat negative outlook on life.

As an aspiring Cultural Anthropologist, I find that most of my interest is most intensely focused on Subculture, the underground, and the deepest human desires.

I continue to grow as a human being and I am gradually shedding the self-made prison that limits my experience and quality of life. I am going to explore humans and their little worlds, and I will share in this Blog my insights, experience, and research on these mini-utopias we call
SubCulture.

You will also experience my own personal obstacles, joys, and happenings along the way as I continue on my journey.
